Twenty four years ago, Abra suffered from an obstructed labour, which not only cost her the life of her fifth child, but left her with an injury that caused her to continually leak urine and faeces. The condition is known as VVF (vesicovaginal fistula) and unfortunately its victims, like Abra, are often ostracised by their family, friends and community.
Abra learned that the Africa Mercy had sailed into port, and she went to get help. The ship’s volunteer crew welcomed her with kindness, and a successful free surgery repaired the injury that had plagued her for decades. Abra’s face radiated with dignity when she expressed her gratitude to Mercy Ships.
