Join Our Team: Chair of Trustees

Mercy Ships is a faith-based international development organisation that deploys teaching hospital ships to some of the poorest countries in the world, delivering vital, free medical care to people in desperate need while training local healthcare professionals and strengthening local healthcare systems. All this work is carried out by volunteers, meaning our supporters’ funds go further. Mercy Ships UK (a key member of the Mercy Ships global partnership) was founded in 1996. It plays a critical role in providing the resources to enable work on board, and in communities. It raises much-needed funds from a variety of donors, and it helps to drive volunteer engagement and recruitment. It is a particularly exciting time to join Mercy Ships UK.

2021 will see the launch of a second floating hospital, the world’s largest purpose-built hospital ship. The Global Mercy will be a symbol of hope as it provides free surgery and high-quality training, drawing volunteers from across the world.

It is a time of growth and transition. The Chair of Mercy Ships UK is a figurehead for the organisation, leading the board of Trustees in providing vision and strategic leadership and supporting the Chief Executive to achieve the mission of the charity. The Chair plays a critical ambassadorial role, helping to broaden and deepen engagement with its partners and supporters, alongside membership of the international board ensuring a strong and constructive relationship with colleagues across the Mercy Ships family. We are looking for an exceptional candidate who will lead, support and inspire inside and outside the organisation, and someone who will lead the Board with commitment and humility.

If this sounds like you, you can find more information in the candidate brief at but you are welcome to have an informal, confidential conversation with either Sarah Lowndes Jones: or James Bailey Johnson:
