Joe Green smashes London Marathon in 3 hours, 11 minutes

School sports coach, Joe Green, pounded the streets of London on Sunday 27th April, covering the 26.2 miles in an incredible 3 hours, 11 minutes and raising a wonderful £1,500 for Mercy Ships.

“It was my first time running a marathon,” explains Joe. “My knee was injured during the training but I strapped it up and just hoped for the best.

“It was absolutely incredible running over Tower Bridge. All my family were there. The cheering was unbelievably loud. But the end was really tough. At about 22 miles, my knee was in a lot of pain. I just gritted my teeth and forced myself to keep going.

“I’m so glad I crossed the finish line and was delighted with my time. I also found out we broke a Guinness World Record for the most finishers of the London Marathon.

“It was a privilege to be able to run for Mercy Ships and raise money for people in sub-Saharan Africa who don’t have access to safe, affordable surgery. Since finishing the marathon, I’ve had the chance to share my story, the work of Mercy Ships and the medal with some of the schools I teach at. Hopefully it’ll inspire the future generation to find out more.”
