God’s love for the poor is obvious as we look at Jesus’ life. Christ begins his ministry by declaring ‘good news to the poor’ and ‘sight to the blind’ (Luke 4:18). Jesus goes so far as to say that we’re looking after Him whenever we care for the sick (Matthew 25:40).
Mercy Ships has followed the model of Jesus for over 40 years, bringing hope and healing to the world’s poor. Our volunteers help the blind see, the lame walk, and outcasts regain dignity.
We treat dental problems, restore sight to those with cataracts blindness, remove suffocating facial tumours, straighten bowed legs, repair women’s childbirth injuries, free limbs constricted by burns, and restore the smiles of babies like Mariama, giving children hope for future.
Every day, on average, 49,000 people like Mariama die needlessly from conditions that are preventable and treatable, simply because they can’t get access to medical care. This global healthcare crisis is an injustice that the Church can and must change.
As the Covid-19 pandemic spreads across Africa, it’s those with health conditions, like Mariama, who are most at risk. So, right now, Mercy Ships are working hard to combat the spread of coronavirus in 11 African nations – providing life-saving equipment and training nurses and doctors on the frontline.
Getting medical care shouldn’t depend on where you were born. Please stand with the poor today and help tackle the global healthcare crisis by joining as a supporter.
