Teddy Bears of Hope

Visitors to this year’s Southampton Boat Show will have the unique opportunity to name hand-knitted teddies that are being sent to child patients on board the world’s largest charity hospital ship – the Africa Mercy.

While being treated on board the Africa Mercy, all the child patients receive a teddy which they can take home with them when they leave and visitors to the Boat Show are being asked to name the teddies that will be given to children in South Africa and Sierra Leone, in return for a small donation.    read more »

Teens Round Ireland Challenge

A group of nine teenagers from the Kinsale area is setting off on a Round Ireland Challenge on (12 August in aid of Mercy Ships.

The keen sailors, some of whom have just finished their Leaving Certificates, will be sailing a 39ft yacht round the coast of Ireland over six days to raise money for free medical and humanitarian aid to the poorest countries in Africa.  read more »

Cycling for African Farmers

More than 40 Scottish young farmers are cycling from Aviemore to Kinross next week to raise money to help young farmers in Africa.

The group, who are all members of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs (SAYFC), will cycle 145 miles over three days as part of the Spirit of Hope Campaign which aims to raise vital funds for young farmers in Benin, West Africa, as well as the SAYFC.  read more »

BT Shortlists Mercy Ships

Mercy Ships has been shortlisted as BT’s charity of choice to work alongside their regular charity partner ChildLine.

BT has been supporting Child Line for 25 years and is looking for a second charity partner with Mercy Ships up against Cancer Research and The British Heart Foundation.

BT will announce the winning charity in September after their 100,000 employees vote for who they would like to see as BT’s charity of choice partner.   read more »

Knitting For Children

Theresa Rowntree, (75) from Braintree in Essex, who recently lost her sight is part of a knitting team producing teddy bears for child patients on board the world’s largest charity hospital ship, the Africa Mercy.

Rebecca Bond from Bassingbourn, Hertfordshire, was deeply touched by stories from her sister, Veronica Weatherhead, a nurse from Royston, who volunteered on board the Africa Mercy in Togo earlier this year.  read more »

Celebrate Father's Day

Father’s Day will be extra special this year for surgeon Leo Cheng as he and his 18-year-old daughter Kat will be preparing for a six week trip together to volunteer on the world’s largest charity hospital ship.

The father and daughter from Cambridge are heading to Togo in West Africa at the beginning of July to volunteer for the international charity Mercy Ships which provides free medical care and humanitarian aid via its hospital ship the Africa Mercy.   read more »

Mercy Ships is celebrating International Children’s Day today (1st June). In the last 30 years Mercy Ships has helped save the lives of thousands of children who have suffered at the hands of poverty.  read more »

New Head of Fundraising

Mercy Ships UK has appointed a new Head of Fundraising as part of its commitment to developing the international charity throughout the UK.

Sarah Balser, who has more than 20 years experience in the fundraising sector, joined Mercy Ships this month and will oversee a team that raises funds for the world’s largest charity hospital ship – the Africa Mercy. The ship, crewed by more than 400 volunteers, provides free medical and humanitarian aid to the world’s poorest people.  read more »
