Dragons Needed

Mercy Ships is appealing for local businesses and organisations to take part in a charity Dragon Boat Race on Saturday 6th June, at Stanborough Park, WGC.

An action-packed day of races and events is planned for all the family and Mercy Ships hopes that businesses will come together to raise much needed funds for its work in Africa.

Each team needs 11 members and two reserves, which includes a space for the drummer at the back of the boat and a steersman at the front.  read more »

Trustee Awarded African Honour

Ann Gloag, co-founder of the transport company Stagecoach and trustee of Mercy Ships UK, has been admitted into the Order of the Star of Africa with the grade of Commander, in recognition of her support for the people and the country of Liberia.

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia, Africa’s first and only female President, honoured Ann Gloag on 11th March at a ceremony attended by the Vice President, members of the national legislature, cabinet ministers, diplomats, UN officials and staff of the JFK Hospital.  read more »

Easter Breakfast Campaign

In the lead up to Easter, Mercy Ships is holding its first ever Easter Breakfast fundraising campaign to help improve the lives of the poor and needy.

The campaign to encourage schools, offices, churches and communities across the UK to hold Easter Breakfasts kicks off this week as the Africa Mercy hospital ship arrives in Benin to provide free medical care to thousands of people in need.   read more »

Landmark Event

A host of leading doctors, business leaders and heads of the medical and shipping industries joined together 31st January 2009 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Mercy Ships.

Among the 130 guests being entertained at the prestigious Landmark Hotel in London with exquisite food and live bands, were Mercy Ship volunteers, the true heroes behind the charity. 

Every year hundreds of doctors, nurses, cooks and engineers give up their lives in the UK and make their way to Africa to volunteer with Mercy Ships.  read more »

Saatchi Exhibition

A series of exclusive images from onboard the world’s largest charity hospital were exhibited at Saatchi & Saatchi Design last night as part of the celebrations to mark the 30th Anniversary of Mercy Ships.

Tim Cole, Head of Photography at Saatchi and Saatchi Design, visited the ship last month where he captured truly life-changing moments of patients being treated onboard, as well as the daily life of the volunteer crew living on the Africa Mercy.   read more »

30th Anniversary Ball

Mercy Ships is celebrating 30 years of service with a gala ball in London on Saturday 31st January 2009. 

The ball will celebrate the end of Mercy Ships’ 30th Anniversary, as well as the charity’s return to Benin in February, where the previous ship has been a number of times.   read more »

New Christmas Cards Range Launched

Mercy Ships UK has launched a new range of Christmas cards to raise support and awareness for its work in Africa.

The new cards, designed by Saatchi and Saatchi Design, have a distinct African theme using photography taken by Mercy Ships volunteers in West Africa.

Those looking for original and uplifting Christmas cards will be able to choose from 6 new designs ranging in price from as little as £2.95 up to £3.25 for 10 cards, making them ideal for Christmas.   read more »

Magnificent Seven

A family of seven from Liverpool are currently volunteering in war-torn Liberia as part of an international crew on board the Africa Mercy - the world’s largest hospital ship currently providing free medical care to thousands of people in the West African country.
 
Andy Cole, newly appointed chief engineer on board the Africa Mercy, his wife Brenda, HR Manager, and his family of five children, Matt (21), Steve (19) Emma (16), Chris (15) and Josh (12) are all living and volunteering on board the ship.  read more »

Scottish Fundraiser for Mercy Ships

Mercy Ships UK has appointed its first Fundraising Manager in Scotland as part of its commitment to developing the charity across the UK.

Susie Hope, who is based near Biggar, joined Mercy Ships this month with more than 15 years experience in the fundraising sector in Scotland.

Prior to her last post as Marketing & Development Director at St Margaret’s School in Edinburgh, Susie has held fundraising and management positions in a variety of charitable organisations including The Meningitis Trust, The Anthony Nolan Trust and Perennial.   read more »

Everyone at Mercy Ships UK has been celebrating this week after Britain’s Paul Goodison won Gold in the Laser sailing at the Olympics.
