President of Liberia Visits Mercy Ship

The crew of the Africa Mercy was honoured by a visit from the president of Liberia, her Excellency President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. Upon her arrival, President Johnson-Sirleaf was greeted by Mercy Ships Founders Don and Deyon Stephens as well as Executive director Solfrid Quist and was presented with a bouquet of flowers. Accompanying the President was Dr. Walter Gwenigale, Liberia’s Minister of Health and Social Welfare.  read more »

Liberian Screening Day

It was still dark when 14 vehicles filled with doctors, nurses, servers, escorts and other volunteers left the Africa Mercy on the way to a sports complex in Monrovia for the 2008 Liberian screening of possible patients for surgery during the current assignment by Mercy Ships to the war-ravaged West African nation.  read more »

Celebrating 30 Years

Mercy Ships is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2008 with a 10-month outreach to Liberia, where it will provide more than 5,000 free surgeries on board the Africa Mercy – the world’s largest charity hospital ship.

The Africa Mercy, purchased for the charity by Ann Gloag OBE, co-founder of the Stagecoach transport group, arrived back in Liberia yesterday following its inaugural outreach to the war-torn country last year.  read more »

Africa Mercy Returns to Liberia

Beautiful African songs rose from the crowd assembled at the dock in the Port of Monrovia as Liberians welcomed the Africa Mercy back to Liberia.

With a wide smile, Mercy Ships crew member and native Liberian, Oscar Gray, carried the flag of his country down the gangway of the Mercy Ship and stepped onto Liberian soil. Cheering and applause erupted from the onlookers and the vibrant celebration began.  read more »
