Ann Gloag OBE, co-founder of the transport company Stagecoach, and Trustee of Mercy Ships UK, received a humanitarian award at a gala dinner held at the United Nations

The National Council of Women of the United States, a U.N. affiliate, chose Ann Gloag to receive its inaugural Susan B. Anthony Humanitarian Award, named after the only woman to appear on a U.S. coin and one of America’s most famous human rights pioneers.

Ann Gloag, a former nurse, was honoured for her extensive charitable work over the last 30 years which has ranged from supporting numerous charities in the UK, to running an orphanage and school in Kenya, as well as setting up the Freedom From Fistula Foundation to help women in Africa and supporting Mercy Ships.

Mary Singletary, President of the National Council of Women of the United States, said, “We are delighted to present the National Council of Women's 1st Susan B. Anthony Humanitarian Award to Ann Gloag of Scotland, who has devoted much of the past three decades making a difference in people's lives, communities and the state of the world.

“The award will be given annually and will recognise people who possess the vision, drive and determination of its namesake, one of the original founders of our organisation. Ann Gloag meets all of those qualifications."

Speaking from the awards dinner, Ann Gloag said, “This is a huge honour and I am humbled that the National Council of Women of the United States chose me to receive the inaugural Susan B. Anthony Humanitarian Award. Susan B. Anthony was a true pioneer and if I achieve a tiny amount of what she achieved I will be very happy.

“Helping to improve the lives of others truly enriches my life and I love being ‘hands on’ with all my charitable projects. I am privileged to be in a position where I have the opportunity to really make a difference and am able to support a wide range of organisations that provide wonderful support for people all over the world

“I would also like to pay tribute to the many people that work with me in Africa and in the UK. Without their hard work and support I wouldn’t be receiving this award.”

Ann Gloag is also a past winner of the Businesswoman of the Year Award, European Women in Achievement Award and has won a Great Scot Award for her work with Mercy Ships.
